How to Choose the Right Plantation Shutters for Your Home

If you're considering plantation shutters for the first time, it can feel like there are a lot of decisions to make — material, louvre size, tilt style, colour, hinges. The good news is that none of it is complicated once you know what each choice actually affects. Here's our guide to help you feel confident before your free consultation.

Why Homeowners Choose Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are a longer-term investment than curtains or blinds, and that shows in what they offer day to day:

  • Precise light control — tilt the louvres to let light in while keeping direct glare out, at any angle you like.

  • Privacy without losing daylight — particularly useful for ground-floor rooms and street-facing windows.

  • Insulation — a well-fitted shutter adds a layer of insulation against heat loss in winter and helps keep rooms cooler in summer.

  • Low maintenance — no cords, no fabric to clean, no fading in the same way curtains fade. A light dust with a dry cloth is usually all they need.

  • A permanent fixture that suits the house — because they're made to measure and fitted to the window itself, they tend to add to a home's finish and appeal in a way loose furnishings don't.

Choosing Your Material

We supply shutters in five materials: Polyvinyl, Paulownia hardwood, Basswood hardwood, Ashwood, and Aluminium. Each has a different feel and is suited to different rooms.

  • Polyvinyl — excellent for bathrooms, kitchens and other high-moisture rooms, as it won't warp or swell.

  • Paulownia and Basswood — lightweight hardwoods with a natural grain, popular for living rooms and bedrooms.

  • Ashwood — a harder, more grained timber for a more characterful finish.

  • Aluminium — durable and low-maintenance, often chosen for conservatories or contemporary spaces.

We bring physical samples of each material to your consultation, so you can see and feel the difference before deciding — colour swatches included.

Louvre Size: Bigger Isn't Always Better

Louvres (the horizontal slats) come in 64mm, 76mm, 89mm and 114mm widths. Narrower louvres suit smaller windows and give a more traditional look, while wider louvres let in more light and work well on larger windows or where you want a more contemporary feel. We'll recommend a size based on your window proportions and how much light you want to control.

Tilt Rod Options

How you open and close the louvres is a bigger decision than people expect, since it affects both the look and everyday usability of the shutter:

  • Traditional front-mounted rod (central or offset) — classic look, easy to reach.

  • Hidden tilt bar within the panel frame — a cleaner, more modern appearance with no visible rod.

  • Clear view rod, mounted on the back edge of the louvres — keeps the front of the shutter completely uninterrupted.

Finishing Touches: Colour & Hinges

We offer a wide range of standard colours from vivid white through to black, in a low sheen/satin finish, wood-stained or grained. If you have a specific shade in mind, we can bespoke colour-match using a RAL code or against paint brands such as Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Dulux. Hinges are available in white, black, cream, brass, antique brass and stainless steel, so you can match your existing fixtures and fittings.

Bay Windows, Awkward Shapes, and Commercial Spaces

We're often asked whether plantation shutters can be fitted to anything other than a standard rectangular window — and the answer is yes. Bay windows, arched windows and other unusually shaped openings can all be fitted with bespoke shutters, made to measure for that specific window rather than a standard size cut down to fit.

It's not just homes, either. We fit shutters in commercial properties as well as residential ones, for businesses that want the same light control, privacy and finish in an office, shop or other workspace. The one exception is external security shutters, which isn't a service we offer.

What Happens Next

Every project starts with a free, no-obligation home consultation. We'll bring physical samples of each material, colour and finish so you can see and feel exactly what you're choosing, and we'll take accurate measurements of every window while we're there — including bay windows and any other awkward shapes.

Once you're ready to go ahead, most projects run from 7 to 9 weeks from survey to fitting. We also offer an express service, which takes 2 to 5 weeks, though this carries an additional charge and excludes certain options. On the day of fitting itself, a single window usually takes just over an hour, while a full house is typically a day's work — though it always depends on the individual windows involved.

All our shutters come with a 5-year guarantee on normal use, and we offer a price-match promise — if you have a genuine like-for-like quote, we'll do our best to beat it. We're proud that our work speaks for itself, too: we currently hold a 5-star rating from 47 Google reviews.

We cover Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield, along with the towns in between — including Batley, Castleford, Keighley and Ilkley. If you'd like to book a free consultation or just have a question about which option would suit your home, get in touch and we'll be happy to help.
