HOW ROOMSCAPE SHUTTERS WAS BORN
OUR STORY
Roomscape came about through a chance conversation with a friend from South Manchester. Exhausted after a day’s landscaping – my other job – I was sounding off when my friend suggested I come over and help him fit some shutters and get a feel for them.
I agreed to dip my toe in... On our first fitting together we had neighbours coming over and wanting to know about the shutters – they were already getting envious attention. Over the following few weeks I got to understand the particular challenges of fitting shutters and I enjoyed the pleasure customers got from seeing their rooms transformed. And, unlike my other life, we were able to work through rain, sleet and snow.
I established Roomscape Shutters and set to work anticipating the arrival of these must-haves to homes in West Yorkshire.
I’ve shopped around for different suppliers to find the best deals on the various materials on the market. The styles are similar throughout most companies but material and colour differences can make a big impact visually and in terms of price.

BECOMING A FAMILY BUSINESS
After a slow start in West Yorkshire, where the novelty of Plantation Shutters took some explaining to many people, the business began to grow as satisfied customers proudly posted the results on Instagram and recommended Roomscape to their friends and family.
I started to need help - firstly with the admin side, where my wife Anne was proving much more adept than me at organising and keeping tabs on orders. I offered her the job. Luckily for me she accepted.. I was also needing extra pairs of hands with the fitting side of the business.
My daughters would come along to unbox and help with the tidying away - a surprisingly time consuming part of the job, but I was really keen to find someone with the skills to adapt to shutter installation as interest started to develop and people found themselves growing tired of looking through the same old windows day after day through lockdown. Some old friends of ours had a son who'd been away to train in theatre set construction and lighting design and was currently furloughed from his successful and well travelled career. It was worth a mention, I thought. Angus leapt at the chance to put his skills to a new use and the two of us now mostly work together, sometimes separately on installations all around the area.
